Colombian duo held over series of thefts

KUALA LUMPUR: A 70-year-old woman and her male accomplice (pix), both Colombians suspected of stealing large amounts of cash from bank customers, were arrested in Bangsar on Tuesday.

Brickfields police chief ACP Anuar Omar said yesterday the duo, who targeted those who had withdrawn cash from banks, are believed to be behind at least four such cases that occurred in Brickfields and Jalan Klang Lama.

He said in the latest incident at 3pm last Friday, a man and his son had withdrawn RM120,000 from a bank in Jalan Klang Lama and were driving towards Jalan Pantai Baru when their car had a flat tyre while driving along the Federal Highway.

On inspecting the tyre, they found that it had been punctured by a piece of metal. After changing the tyre, they entered the car and found that the cash and several documents were missing.

They then lodged a police report.

Acting on information, Brickfields CID carried out an operation in Bangsar on Tuesday and spotted the Colombian woman and her 55-year-old male accomplice in a silver Honda Civic.

Police trailed the suspects and cornered them at Jalan Telawi 4. The foreigners bolted out of their car and tried to escape.

Police found several documents and cellphones belonging to the suspects in the car which was fitted with false registration plates.

The suspects have been remanded for four days to facilitate investigations.
