PETALING JAYA: A police corporal who allegedly fleeced a lorry driver of RM500 by offering to settle his traffic summons for a lower fine was arrested on Wednesday at the district police headquarters here.
It is learnt that the 46-year-old victim who works as lorry driver for a Shah Alam-based company went over to the traffic police summons payment counter here to check if his son had any issued against him.
A check showed that his son had summons with fines amounting to RM1,120.
As the man examined the print-out, he was approached by the suspect who offered to help him.
The suspect claimed that he has friends in Bukit Aman who could lower the fines.
The 45-year-old corporal then offered to clear the summons for RM500 with a promise of settling it within three days after receiving payment.
Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal (pix) said the victim fell for the offer and deposited the sum into the suspect’s bank account.
He said when the lorry driver found that the summons were not settled a week later, he lodged a police report on Wednesday.
Nik Ezanee said the corporal was promptly arrested and remanded for four days.
He said the case is classified as cheating and a test on urine samples taken from the suspect tested positive for methamphetamines.
Nik Ezanee advised the public to settle their traffic summons fines at traffic police payment counters nationwide and alternatively at websites appointed by the government to accept such transactions.
