Cops urge witnesses with information on Adib’s death to come forward

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have urged witnesses with any information to come forward and facilitate the investigation into the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department D5 (prosecution and legal division) principal assistant director SAC Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said police are prepared to record statements of witnesses to assist the ongoing murder investigation.

“We will also recall the past witnesses if there is a need in completing the probe. We hope those with new information on the case can come forward and we will record their statements,“ he told a press conference in Bukit Aman police headquarters here today.

He said the department would track down those responsible behind Adib’s death.

“Just like police said previously, the investigations into Adib’s death never stopped. We are now investigating the matter under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. We are also waiting for further instructions from the Attorney General’s Chambers,“ he said.

On Friday, the Coroner’s Court ruled that Adib’s death was caused by two or more persons unknown.

Coroner judge Rofiah Mohamad read her judgement after 41 days of inquest proceedings.

“The blunt chest trauma (on Adib) is not caused by himself or (an) accident but a criminal act by two or more persons unknown,“ said the coroner.

The verdicts that could have been reached by the Coroner’s Court were an open verdict, a verdict of misadventure, or death by person or persons unknown.

Meanwhile, on another matter Mior said Puteri Umno vice-chief Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi has been called today to give her statement at the Bukit Aman police headquarters after she claimed a Penang man shot dead by police had run amok due to co-workers’ remarks insulting Islam last week.

“She has been ordered to present herself to the police at 10am today. We received a report lodged against her in Penang and we decided to call her to Bukit Aman to have her statement recorded,” he said.

Mior also confirmed the Umno leader was being probed under Section 505 (c) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

On Sept 25, Nurul Amal made her claim in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, after Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador expressly warned against inciting racial and religious hatred over the incident.

Following public backlash, Nurul Amal defended her statement, saying she was merely passing on her prayers to the deceased and that she did not condone the suspect’s action.

On Sept 23, a 25-year-old quality control inspector with a multinational factory had attacked two of his colleagues and was gunned down when he turned on the police team responding to the incident.

A 48-year-old woman suffered fatal wounds to her head, neck and arms while a safety director was hacked on his arms when he tried to stop the attack.

Claims that the victims had insulted the Prophet Muhammad and Islam began to surface shortly after, leading to Abdul Hamid warning the public against fanning racial and religious tensions.

Meanwhile, police have initiated an investigation into an allegation where Methodist Girls’ School in Penang had recited a Christian prayer and refrained students from reciting Muslim prayers during an awards ceremony in the school recently.

“Police investigating the matter under Section 505 (c) of the Penal Code,” he said.

The penal code is to investigate someone for making, publishing or circulating any statement, rumour or report with intent to incite the community to commit any offence against any other community.

It was also reported that the education ministry had issued a warning to the school.

The director-general of education ministry, Datuk Amin Senin, said the ministry is considering further disciplinary action against the Methodist girls’ school for contravening national education regulations.
