KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) today advised potential candidates in the upcoming Semenyih state by-election to fill up and make a preliminary review of the nomination form to avoid making mistakes on Nomination Day.

EC chairman Azhar Azizan Harun said they could do this at the Kajang Municipal Council office, which will double up as the office of the Returning Officer, or the Selangor State Election Commission office before Nomination Day.

Nomination for the Semenyih state by-election is on Saturday and polling on March 2. The by-election has been necessitated by the death of the assemblyman, Bakhtiar Mohd Nor of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), on Jan 11.

“The reason for the preliminary review is to ensure that all potential candidates fill up the form correctly and adhere to the stipulated conditions to avoid mistakes in filling up the form on Nomination Day.

“This measure will ensure a smooth nomination process on Nomination Day and within the period specified,“ he said in a statement.

Azhar said the preliminary review also provided the opportunity for any party which found out that its candidate was unqualified to make the appropriate preparations for Nomination Day.

He said a nomination form that had been filled up and reviewed must be handed over by the potential candidate or proposer or seconder to the returning officer on Nomination Day at the nomination centre on Saturday.

The potential candidates must also make their deposits (the election deposit and campaign materials deposit) earlier, he added.

“The potential candidates are also advised to take the passes for the candidate, proposer and seconder after paying the deposits to enable them to gain access into the nomination centre on Nomination Day.

“This is to ensure that the nomination process can be completed much faster and more smoothly on Nomination Day,“ he said. — Bernama
