Former TM manager sentenced to jail and fine of more than RM4m

SHAH ALAM: A former Telekom Malaysia Berhad marketing and SME channel manager has been sentenced to jail and fined RM4,111,992.95 after being found guilty of making fraudulent claims of almost RM1 million, six years ago.

Sessions court judge Rozilah Salleh ordered Noorazlina Shamsuddin, 44, to be jailed a year for each charge and ordered for the sentence to be served concurrently starting from today.

She also ordered a further 35 month imprisonment should the accused fail to pay the fine imposed on her.

On Nov 12, 2014, Noorazlina claimed trial in the sessions court here to 10 counts of making false claims totalling RM822,398.

She was charged under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) 2009 Act was for using delivery orders and invoices belonging to Syarikat Excellent Spring Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Core Entity Sdn Bhd, which contained the false claims when in reality the projects did not take place.

Noorazlina allegedly committed the offences at TM MSC office in TM Cyberjaya Complex, Cyberjaya, between Apr 17, 2012 and Jan 2, 2013.

The judge ruled that the defence failed to prove reasonable doubt against the prosecution’s case.

She added that she hoped Noorazlina learned her lesson from what has happened.

“I don’t know what she was thinking between 2012 until January 2013. Corruption is a disease,“ the judge said.

Prosecution was by MACC deputy public prosecutor Mohammad Heikal Ismail while the accused was represented by lawyers Arik Zakri Abdul Kadir and Ahmad Kamal Abu Bakar.

Her lawyers appealed for a lesser sentence as their client has repented over her wrongdoings.

“The accused now works on her goat farm in Beranang on her own initiative. Her husband has a few illnesses and the couple do not have jobs and have also lost friends in this ordeal,“ Arik Zakri told the court.

He also told the court that Noorazlina had worked with TM since 1995 in Johor Baru as a sales assistant and received the award of best sales manager TM SME in 2013.

However, the prosecution said that public interest of the case has to be taken into consideration and the sentence has to be a deterrent not just for the accused but to others as well.
