KUALA LUMPUR: A man, with seven criminal records of various offences, today was sentenced to five months’ jail by the Selayang Magistrate’s Court here for trespassing into a mosque and stealing.
Magistrate Nur Hafizah Rajuni meted out the sentence on Sharuddin Nazardin, 42, after he pleaded guilty to committing the offences at Masjid Nurul Iman, Kampung Kenanga Batu 18, Rawang, Selangor, between 12.15 and 12.30 am, on April 6.
He was sentenced to four months’ jail for trespassing and another five months for stealing, however, the court ordered that both sentences run concurrently from the date of his arrest on April 11.
Sharuddin was charged with committing criminal trespass by entering the mosque’s area and getting onto the mosque’s roof without permission, under Section 447 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to six months or a fine not exceeding RM3,000, or both.
He was also accused of stealing a mobile phone, five shirts, 10 pants, one sling bag, three mobile electronic devices and cash totalling RM150 from the mosque’s staff, under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum seven years in jail, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Based on the facts of the case, during the incident the accused had entered the mosque’s area by climbing onto the roof and breaking it.
He also had gotten into the mosque’s cabin room by holding a stick while the complainant, who is one of mosque’s staff, was sleeping, and stole the said items.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shasha Hidayah Nor Azahar appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented. - Bernama
