KUCHING: Sarawak recorded a total of 354 road accidents during Op Selamat 22 in conjunction with Aidilfitri from April 8 to 13, according to Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata.

He said the number was an increase compared to the 325 cases recorded during Op Selamat 20 last year while fatal cases dipped slightly from eight deaths in 2023 to seven this year.

“One reason for the increase in accidents is due to the carelessness and negligence of drivers who fail to control their vehicles.

“Another is the road factor and bad terrain such as potholed roads. Poor maintenance of vehicles is another cause,“ he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, Mancha said 8,804 summonses were issued for various offences during Op Selamat 22 compared to 7,316 summons in Op Selamat 20 last year.

In KUALA TERENGGANU, a total of 359 accidents were recorded during Op Selamat 22/2024 in the state, said Terengganu police chief Datuk Mazli Mazlan.

Mazli said seven fatal accidents were recorded on federal roads, state roads and the East Coast Highway (LPT). “The (seven) fatal accidents occurred during the six days of this year’s Op Selamat from April 8, compared to nine cases last year.

He said 9,052 summonses were issued to traffic offenders with a total value of around RM20,000.

“Most were issued for offences of speeding, cutting queues and running red lights,“ he said after a handover ceremony of the Head of the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK), Head of Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) and Acting Police Chief of Setiu District.

Mazli also said 12 house-breaking cases were recorded but said pointedly that burglars struck at homes outside the areas registered with the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application for police patrols.

“This year, Terengganu police received 490 applications through VSP and form-filling at police stations.
