Parents receive death threat after son fails to pay debt

PETALING JAYA: An elderly couple in Kampung Baru Nalla, near Tronoh, Batu Gajah are living in fear after receiving a note from loan sharks threatening to kill them and having their house splashed with red paint, stemming from their son’s failure to pay the debt.

Harian Metro reported today that Ho Weng Yun, 63, and his wife Loh Hor Thal, 62, say they do not know the whereabouts of their 31-year-old son, the youngest of their three children, after he ran away from home in last October.

Ho said he found out his son had taken out a loan only after receiving a call from an unknown person instructing his son to pay the debt immediately.

The former vegetable farmer then received an envelope at 11 pm on November 28 containing his son’s IC and a picture of his son-in-law.

“There are several threatening notes, one of which says: ‘Everyone who has a relationship with you will die, pay the debt immediately’ and it included a prayer tool for the dead,“ Ho said.

The elderly couple tried to contact their son but failed.

On April 6 at 3am, Ho was woken by an explosion and found the fence and wall of their home splashed with red paint, and presented with another threatening note.

Speaking during a press conference with Tronoh assemblyman, Steven Tiw Tee Siang at the his service centre, Ho said he has since lodged four police reports out of concern for the safety of himself and his family.

After discussing with other family members, Ho said they have decided to cut ties with their son and asked him to leave them alone.

“We are poor, we have no money to pay.

“Please don’t bother us and look for him instead, the one that borrowed the money,“ Ho pleaded.

Loh also expressed her uncertainty regarding the amount of debt or the number of lenders involved.

“I once warned him not to get involved in gambling, drugs or borrowing from loan sharks, yet now he has put his own parents’ lives in danger,“ she lamented.

She said their son had worked as a hawker’s assistant in Singapore before returning home last year with his wife and two children but the couple then fled, leaving their young daughter in the care of Ho and Loh.

Tiw said the press conference was held at the request of the elderly couple to explain their situation and hope there will be no more incidents which disturbed the peace of their neighbourhood.
