PETALING JAYA: A police inspector was remanded for six days yesterday in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl in Taman Johor Jaya on Monday.

According to the New Straits Times, Johor police chief Commissioner M. Kumar said the remand order against the 29-year-old senior officer from Pontian district police headquarters will expire on April 28.

The suspect is being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 for physical sexual assault.

The alleged incident occurred around 6pm on Monday and the suspect was arrested around 11pm that same day in Seri Alam, about five hours after the report was lodged.

Police seized the inspector’s mobile phone and SIM card believed to contain evidence related to the case and if convicted, he faces up to 20 years in jail and caning.

“We will not compromise and will take stern action, without favour or fear, against any police personnel, regardless of rank, who engage in criminal activities or behaviours,“ he was quoted as saying.

Kumar stressed the importance of adhering to the principle of equality before the law, as stated in Article 8 of the Federal Constitution.

He also cautioned against engaging in public speculation that could potentially interfere with the ongoing probe and he urged individuals who have relevant information to contact either the police hotline at 07-2212999 or the Johor contingent headquarters at 019-2792095.
