MARANG: The role of the Neighborhood Watch or ‘’Rukun Tetangga’’ institution (KRT) as an agent of unity among the community is still relevant and important today, says Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Md Farid Md Rafik (pix).
Md Farid said it was undeniable that the KRT was a body close to the local community and a platform and voice for them to channel their concerns.
“Many activities based on interactions among the multi-racial community have been carried out by the KRT and this has given them the opportunity to gather, interact and strengthen the spirit of unity among them.
“Therefore, the role of the KRT as an agent of unity is particularly important in today’s borderless society where people are exposed to the spread of uncontrolled rumors through social media,“ he said after opening the Taman Dato’ Ibrahim KRT Community Hall here, today
Terengganu Unity Director Burhanuddin Daud was also present.
Earlier, Md Farid, who is also Tanjung Piai MP, participated in a 20 km ‘’Unity Fun Ride’’ cycling event with over 100 members of the community from the Marang district.
In another development, he said the government would also be allocating RM16 million to more than 6,000 KRTs nationwide starting later this month to help them carry out activities in their respective areas.
“We had allocated RM10 million for phase one earlier this year. The distribution will be made according to three categories, the most active, active and moderately active KRTs, whereby each category will receive a different amount of allocation,“ he said.
According to him, there are about 8,200 KRTs nationwide, and 20% of them were found to be inactive. — Bernama
