PETALING JAYA: While it is typical for the majority of employees to list salary requirements as the reason for leaving a company, a recent survey indicated otherwise.

Findings by the 2024 Hays Asia Salary Guide showed that the salary no longer holds the top spot for contemplating on leaving one’s workplace.

The survey was completed by employees across six countries, namely, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Malaysia and conducted online in late 2023 for six weeks.

The report surveyed 2,014 skilled professionals and 832 employees from Malaysia.

The survey shows Malaysian employees prioritising seeking new challenges as one of the main factors for leaving their workplace.

However, in 2023, low salary packages were cited as the first reason for an employee’s resignation.

Besides seeking new challenges, another factor motivating Malaysian employees to leave their workplace is the lack of career progression.

However, Malaysian workers who chose to remain in their workplace focused on their work location, flexible working options, work-life balance and fitting in with their manager and colleagues.

“It is important to recognise that the workforce is keen to contribute towards the business’s survival as well as their own.

“Employees are generally tuned into economic uncertainties and are still looking for opportunities to grow through these challenges. Therefore, when employers rally their teams with well-defined challenges, everyone will be better equipped to move forward together,” said Hays Asia managing director Marc Burrage.
