Tremors not felt in Semporna, mild tremblings in Kunak, Lahad Datu

SEMPORNA: The mild 3.3 Richter scale earthquake which hit at 10.01 am today, was not felt by locals in the district, Semporna Fire and Rescue station chief Fazizul Hizam Borhan said.

“The department has yet to receive any report of tremors in the district,“ he said when contacted by Bernama today.

However when met by Bernama some residents in Kunak and Lahad Datu districts disclosed feeling the tremors.

Ardy Amat from Lahad Datu said he felt a trembling for about five seconds while he was in the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) Plasma Hall.

“I was standing when the quake happened, but I thought it I was just my feeling, but as soon as the meteorological report came out, I knew then, that it was an earthquake,“ he told Bernama.

Meanwhile Muhd Aiman Aziz from Kunak said he had felt a vibration while watching television.

“I felt a slight tremor for just a few seconds,“ he said.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department in a statement said the quake’s depth was 10 km and that the epicentre was 14 km west of Semporna.

It said tremors might continue to be felt in Semporna and that the department was monitoring the situation closely. - Bernama
