Excelling with flying colours

As expected, graduating students of First City University College’s (FCUC) Faculty of Design and Built Environment (FDBE) proved their industry-readiness at the long-standing annual Momentum 2020 Graduation Showcase.

The latest graduating batch from the Diploma of Graphic Design and the Diploma in Interior Design programmes were tasked with planning and then executing a visual concept for their chosen project.

In line with this year’s retro futurism inspired theme, Envision the Future, each design work of the 35 participating student (26 from Interior Design and nine from Graphic Design) was meant to reflect the tension between elements of the past and future.

Figuratively speaking, Momentum 2020 functioned as a time machine, transporting visitors back in time to experience 1980s culture by immersing them in the design and music of the iconic era.

FDBE staff have credited the students’ stellar design sense with their exposure to industry-level projects, which have come about as a result of the many established links First City UC enjoys with high-profile industry partners and professional bodies.

Diploma in Interior Design Programme Coordinator Leong Kooi Hoong revealed that the participants managed to develop their inspiration during internship sessions leading up to Momentum. He added that the exposure gained at these internship spots definitely helped to shape their appreciation for desirable design elements.

Furthermore, FDBE Deputy Dean Asst Prof Chua Huwi Huwi expressed her pride at the students’ stellar job performances during their internship experience. These would prove valuable later when attempting to secure their first job.

“Momentum has time and time again proven capable of connecting students with potential employers, who are usually invited to the showcase as special guests. Students with exceptional design works have been known to be offered jobs before graduation”, shared FCUC Director Tan Sri Dr Teo Chiang Liang.

Students interested in the Diploma in Graphic Design and Diploma in Interior Design programmes as well as other design-related Bachelor Degree programmes may opt to attend First City UC’s Open Day sessions held throughout September and October. Alternatively, students and parents may choose to arrange for a physical Campus Tour during this period.

Prospective students are encouraged to enrol quickly as to ensure that they will be among the first 100 students entitled for First City UC’s attractive financial assistance and scholarships.

Other scholarships and financial assistance available include the First City Merit Scholarship, UEC Scholarship, Sports Scholarship, Sibling and Alumni Incentive, as well as many others.
