Cyclist Jakobsen returning to Netherlands after horror crash

WARSAW: Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen (pix), wakened from an artificial coma last week after a heavy crash at the Tour of Poland, is returning to the Netherlands on Wednesday to continue his recovery.

Jakobsen suffered head injuries on the opening stage of the race when compatriot Dylan Groenewegen leaned into him on a sprint finish and slammed Jakobsen into the barriers. Groenewegen was disqualified and has apologized while Jakobsen underwent a five-hour operation before being placed in a coma at a hospital in Sosnowiec.

“Fabio Jakobsen’s condition is evolving favourably, to the extent that he will be transferred Wednesday to the hospital in Leiden, the Netherlands (LUMC), where further follow-up treatment of his injuries will take place,” a statement from his Deceuninck Quickstep team said.

Polish criminal prosecutors are investigating the case. – dpa
