Taylor’s University launches accounting degree with Fintech

Taylor’s University recently launched its degree programme in Bachelor in Accounting (Fintech)(Honours) which is designed to give graduates a comprehensive look into accounting and financial technology.

It’s the first degree in Malaysia to enable graduates to specialise in fintech at the undergraduate level, unlocking key career opportunities for aspiring accountants.

The three-year dual award degree programme launched in collaboration with the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, will blend the fundamentals of accounting with innovative and technology focused modules to future proof graduates for exciting roles in the ever-evolving financial technology sector.

“As we speed towards our digital transformation journey in light of the government’s recently announced MyDigital initiative, financial inclusion will be key to support Malaysia’s digital and technological revolution. This includes adapting new technologies to conventional streams of finance like accounting and building an effective talent pool who are then able to effectively spearhead new innovations within this industry in the near future,” said Professor Dr. Pradeep Nair, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer, Taylor’s University.

The industry-ready accounting degree will cover key areas in financial accounting, management accounting, audit and assurance, corporate governance, taxation, corporate finance, information systems, blockchain, financial technology and innovation.

There are specified modules relating to fintech such as Blockchain Economics, Data Analytics and Machine Learning, Fintech and Innovation, Introduction to Cloud Computing, and Accounting Information Technology Fundamentals.

These skills and knowledge will help graduates acquire a strong foundation in finance and technology, and meet the industry requirements from various organizations such as the Big Four accounting firms, banking and financial services, multinational corporations, public and government agencies.

“Today we are exposed to multiple new technologies like blockchain, cryptocurrency, cloud networks and artificial intelligence that are transforming the financial services industry. Taylor’s partnership with University of Canterbury in New Zealand also opens the doors for graduates to choose to transfer in the final year of the programme to UC and receive awards from both Taylor’s University and the partner institution upon graduation.

This first industry partnership of its kind in Malaysia provides graduates an opportunity to not only enhance their professional skills but also improves graduate employability.

The three-year programme includes two internships during the coursework which will provide graduates with a much-needed exposure to real time industry requirements. To ensure graduates are able to gain internships at top firms and learn from reputed industry mentors, Taylor’s has built strong partnerships and collaborations with organisations such as Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, CIMB, Maybank, Finology and Fundaztic.
