MALAYSIAN “Math genius” Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin has been thrust into the spotlight after it was discovered that he is now a postgrad student in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Nur Fitri was convicted for possession of child pornographic materials in the United Kingdom when he was studying in Imperial College.

In November 2014, the British police tracked an excessive amount of downloads of child pornography to his residence in Queensborough Terrace.

The police found a life-sized mannequin of a boy beside him, and 601 Category A videos and images, and thousands of Category B and C material.

Category A is defined as the most extreme form crime.

He was later secretly flown back to Malaysia after serving his short sentence in 2015.

According to mStar, a professor at UKM’s Science and Technology faculty said Nur Fitri managed to complete his Masters in a year and successfully enrolled to become a PhD student.

“I admit he is very smart. In terms of percentage of genius ... I would say he makes the top 5%.”

When Nur Fitri first joined the university, the professor told him to start afresh.

“I told him directly, I know his story. He told me that what he did was not wrong,“ he said.

The professor added that Nur Fitri has entrusted to give tutorials to students and there have been no complaints.

While there is no question of Nur Fitri’s genius, netizens appear unimpressed with him being given a second chance.

“How do we know he’s changed? Was his laptop/ PC checked for any child pornography? He can appear as normal as the next person but god knows what he’s doing behind closed doors.”

“This is a paedophile we’re talking about. The safety of our loved ones are at stake.”

However, some expressed willingness to give him a second chance.
