Muhammad Adib still critical but stable: DG

SHAH ALAM: Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim (pix), the fireman who was seriously injured after being attacked in the riot incident at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ25, Subang Jaya on Nov 27, is still critical despite being stable.

Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director-general Datuk Muhammad Hamdan Wahid said this was because the fireman was still on certain machines to stabilise his organs.

‘’Although we describe his situation as stable he is still critical. It is understood, it (specialist treatment and utilisation of machines) will take a certain period of time.

‘’Till date, visitors are not permitted for the next one or two days, the specialist doctors will decide on it (receiving visitors). His spirit is strong and we hope to see positive signs,‘’ he told reporters after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between JBPM and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) here, today.

He said the latest development of Muhammad Adib, who could already write to communicate, was a positive sign on his improving health and it was hoped that the fireman would be able to tell about the actual situation befalling him during the incident.

Meanwhile, commenting on the preparedness of the JBPM in facing the flood season, Muhammad Hamdan said all department operation centres nationwide had been co-ordinated with the headquarters so that reports on the current situation in their respective areas were always received for further action.

He said, besides logistics preparation to help the communities face the disaster, annual leave for the 10,000 firemen nationwide had been frozen since last month.

‘’Since, floods are a regular occurrence, we use the National Security Council Directive 20 (MKN20) as a mechanism to co-ordinate the work with the help of other agencies to cope with the disaster this time.

‘’From now onwards until February, we advise the public against going to high-risk picnic areas such as mountain-climbing, swimming at waterfalls, going to the beach, rivers or rivulets to avoid untoward incidents,‘’ he said.

In another development, asked if there would be any improvements on the department next year, Muhammad Hamdan said among the aspects which would be given priority was intensive human capital development, namely, involving various forms of training, learning and the process of approaching the communities.

In addition, he said the JBPM’s standard operating procedure would also be studied from time to time as a preparation to face the current pattern of incidents which were seen to have changed greatly compared to the past.

‘’Close co-operation with numerous other agencies will also be boosted in the future so that the aspect of disaster management can be arranged well to ensure the safety of the people is at a good level,‘’ he said. — Bernama
