Man arrested for stealing money from mosque

IPOH: Being banished from the state before and having 13 previous criminal records did not change a man who was arrested for allegedly stealing money from the donation box at Shukuriah Mosque in Telok Bakong, Bota, Perak Tengah on Jan 8.

Perak Tengah district police chief, Supt Barudin Wariso said the 53-year-old man was arrested in Semanggol, Kerian at 6.45pm last Friday and police also seized a Proton Iswara car and several items including adhesive tape and some cash from him.

He said the investigation revealed that the suspect had been involved in about eight cases of theft of mosque items and donation funds in several districts in Perak and Kedah since the middle of last year.

“The suspect confessed to using a long piece of plastic wrapped with adhesive tape to steal the money in the mosques by plugging it into the hole of the donation boxes,“ he said in a statement, here today.

Barudin said the arrest was made following a report lodged by a man on the theft at Shukuriah Mosque, Telok Bakong, Bota at 5.30pm on Jan 8.

He said the suspect, who was from Kampung Changkat Siputeh, here, was also wanted by police for an offence under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

“The suspect had been sentenced under the Internal Security Act and was banished to Kuantan in 2016,“ he said, adding that the man was now being held at the Seri Iskandar police station in Perak Tengah. - Bernama
